Designer Biography : Monica L. Walker

I have always had a passion in the visual arts so the opportunity to join Avantforms was an exciting venture. A native Floridian, I have been in the design industry professionally for over nine years. Working in architect's offices as a designer and project manager, as well as teaching at the university level on theory and history of architecture during my time as a graduate student. After several years of working professionally as an Architectural Designer with corporate architecture firms, I found that I wanted to experience a multi disciplinary method to design. So I moved to my home town and began creating art, photography, graphics, furniture, as well as architectural and interior designs for private clients as a freelance designer with a group of my colleagues from university. It has been an exciting three years approaching design from a multi-disciplinary style with Avantforms. Aside from my design and art ventures I have also been a part of a published anthology, "African American Architects a biographical dictionary 1865-1945", Published by Routledge in 2004. Photography is also one of my many hobbies, the images above are samples of my photography. Given my professional background I felt that after practicing architecture for six years conventionally, joining Avantforms would be the next journey to add to my list of adventure and accomplishment in the design field. In addition to my work experience, I've received two academic degrees in the visual arts, a bachelors in Art History & Criticism from The Florida State University, and a Masters in Architecture from Miami University (Ohio). As a student I won several design awards and scholarly grants including the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) student design award in 1999, and at the age of nineteen was selected to be one of three students to represent Florida A&M University's School of Architecture at Harvard's Prestigious Graduate School of Design summer design program in Cambridge, Massachutes.
